Well, well, well. I got myself an award. Kim from http://lifeandtimesofkimbosue.blogspot.com/ nominated me for my very first blog award. Yay! Thanks Kim! None of us want to blog into a black hole, so getting some props for spilling your soul out into cyberspace certainly feels rewarding. Plus, I was just thinking about the whole ‘award-thing’ while channeling-surfing past the Oscars this part weekend. Like, what other normal line of work has such self-congratulatory practices?
And nominees for the best performance by a Playground Monitor Breaking Up a Brawl are…
Anyway, I have been charged with nominating 10 more blogs that are award-worthy. I’ll be honest, I’m pretty new to the blogging community here, so some of these blogs I’ve only visited a few times, but I still connect with the bloggers, so they get my vote!
So here are the rules:
Put the logo on your blog or post.
Nominate at least 10 blogs with show great attitude and/or gratitude.
Be sure to link to your nominees in your post
Let your nominees know they have received the award by leaving them a comment on their blog
And be sure to link this post to the person who nominated you for the award.
Here are some blogs that have helped me get through…
- Baby Smiling in the Backseat http://babysmiling.wordpress.com/
- Fallopian Tudes http://fallopiantudes.blogspot.com/
- Schroedingers Zygote http://schroedingerszygote.com/
- Sluggish Butterfly http://sluggishbutterfly.blogspot.com/
- The Tragic Optimist http://tragicoptimist.wordpress.com/about/
- Yes, we’re parents! http://tessiekeys.blogspot.com/
- Cyber Blue http://cyberrblue.wordpress.com/2009/02/17/lets-talk-about-infertility/
- Exploring Chaos http://exploringchaos.com/
- Of Course You’ll Get Pregnant http://of-course-youll-get-pregnant.blogspot.com/
- What If? http://ginnegaap.blogspot.com/

So go take a look at these blogs and drop them a comment if you would! I don’t know about your guys, but I LOVE me some comments! They’re like virtual chocolate. (Starting to giggle now…) That reminds me of ‘Sexual Chocolate’ from the movie ‘Coming to America’ with Eddie Murphy. Haven’t seen that movie in years! Please tell me you guys are old enough to remember this fun little film.
Please?
I don’t know quite when it happened, but I got old…like ‘when I was your age…lecturing teenagers’ old. Let me qualify myself here, I don’t mean old like ‘going to croak at any minute, body aching, mind going’ old. I mean, ‘losing my cultural relevance can’t understand new fashion trends, shake my head at loud music and low-cut jeans’ old. I don’t remember the transition. I used to be current. I understood fashion, even if I wasn’t very fashionable. I knew what music was popular even if I didn’t listen to it. I even watched MTV’s the Real World! Is that show even on? I don’t get MTV anymore because, well, because I’m OLD.
Even if I DID get MTV, I couldn’t watch that show anymore because I would just be gasping at all the late teen/early 20’s debauchery that ensues on shows like that. Maybe it was having my son that turned me old, or dealing with infertility, or turning 33. My hubby has been complaining that he’s ‘old’ practically since we got married 11 years ago. That really irks me. I always tell him, ‘If you’re complaining about being old already now, what’s, it’ going to be like in 20 years?’.
And here I am (the pot to the kettle) complaining about the same thing. Oddly enough, feeling old has nothing to do with feeling mature. I won’t go into that again since I just bemoaned about that yesterday.
Anyway, what would really make me feel better is for you to let me know something that YOU remember from the 80’s: a favorite fashion trend, teen pop star, song, movie, etc. I NEED to know I’m not alone in my oldness. Even if you weren’t born yet…humor me, would you?

Oh how about those jelly shoes? Ya know the ones that were “so cool” and how cool we were when we’d wear em? Oh how I loved mine! And then…I saw em in the store a few months back and they were “retro”! That’s not RETRO! That was only 20 years ago…*sigh* ok it’s retro. Yeah, I’m old too. I’m no longer cool, I’d MUCH rather have my OLD friends over for dinner and a glass or 2 of wine instead of going to the bar, and the thought of going to bed early when we have a sitter, makes me giggle with excitement. Yep, I’m old too. I hear ya, sister!

I’m right there with you wondering when I become some unhip. I prefer that term to old. I’ve got you age wise by a year or two so I definately remember the 80’s. Here’s a few things to take you back in time (and no, I’m not going to use a Delorean to do this).
1. I still have my cabbage patch kid bought in the mad rush when they first appeared in stores in 1983.
2. I owned the following clothing: Jelly shoes and bracelets, a banana clip, a Thriller-esque jacket, leg warmers, parachute pants, neon clothes, etc.
3. How about we flash back to some movies: Anything with the Brat Pack (16 Candles, St. Elmos Fire, Pretty in Pink), Goonies, Ghostbusters, Weird Science, Top Gun, Good Morning Vietnam, Rainman
4. Do I need to even mention music? I have my Totally 80’s CD’s and I’m proud of it.
5. How about these catchphrases: Whatever, Totally, Wooooaaaaah, I’ve fallen and I can’t get up, How You Doin’?, Definately Definately Kmart, Eat my shorts,
6. Or, Slang Terms: Airhead, Awesome, Bodacious (usually linked with Tatas), boy toy, butt ugly, ditz, for all you TTC’ers (do the nasty, do the wild thing, boink, get horizontal), gnarly, homeboy, phat, poser, preppy, schmooze, spaz, veg and wannabe.
Ok, I probably had WAY too much fun with this Eve, but I did need a bit of a distraction today. Yes, I’m a child of the 80’s…I graduated HS in 1991 so I really do remember everything that I wrote down.

I’m about 10 years younger than you, but I can’t even watch MTV, and I don’t get the culture references….
Though, I was raised a lot differently than most of the people I know who are my age, and I’ve never really understood them.
The other day though, I looked in the mirror and realized I look closer to my age than I ever have before… I think I’ve just grown up a lot with everything the last couple years…. but the last 6 months especially. My eyes definitely look a lot older to me though.

Haha! I love this. Ali and Beautiful Mess already mentioned some of the very best things from the 80’s (Cabbage Patch Kids and jelly shoes!) I would also like to add:
* big, awful bangs (sprayed stiff with aerosol Aquanet, of course)
* tight rolled, stone washed jeans
* reebok high tops (muti-color)
* IOU sweatshirts (although that is creeping into the early 90’s).
* ET
I must stop myself there. I am supposed to be working and I am finding way to much amusement in thinking waaaay back to the 80’s. I guess I am old too.

Thanks so much for my award!!! I really appreciate that. I’ll have to dole out my awards and send you a link tomorrow.
As for old – I hear ya! I’ve been feeling that way lately, too.
So . . . a memory from the 80s . . . . how about neon v-neck sweaters (usually work backwards)? Or those rubber Maddonna bracelets – worn by the 100s, sometimes laced over each other and stacked on the arm. Or wearing like 5 different swatches – facing in different directions. Or rolling the bottoms of your jeans. Or big socks OVER the jeans. WOW – I could keep going. Button-front shirts, collars up, and big belts over the top with leggings underneath? What about wearing boxer shorts with leggings as an outfit to school? I better stop now before I embarass myself.

I did the award thing and linked to you on my blog. Thank you so much, I’m interested in how many people will come see my blog.

Some things I reluctantly remember from the latter part of the 80’s: slap bracelets, slam books, lock-ins, Ray-Bans, valley girls, Hypercolor, 10 speeds, Michael Jordan & Scottie Pippen, the return of the penny loafer, Esprit, Benneton, perms.

You ladies are cracking me up…I’m about ready to dance around my office to ‘She’s a Maniac’ with my leg warmers and welding gear, lol!
Let’s see what my favorite 80’s memories are…
What about the urban myth that the kid from the Michael Jackson video (that one who did the breakdance spin on his head) fell while doing that and broke his neck?
Or the fact that someone knew someone who ate pop rocks and then drank a two liter of soda and their stomach exploded?
Or were those just me?

Thanks for the award!
I teach teenagers now, and I’ve become painfully aware of how old I am. One kid was talking about how he got “RickRolled”, and I couldn’t help reminiscing about how “Never gonna give you up” was a very popular song when I was in, oh, grade 4.
So yeah, old.

You’re making me feel *really* old! I totally know how you feel – I caught myself saying just last week, “Texting – I’m too old for that.” Then realized that I became one of those people who are now beyond the trends and residing in the land of the uncool.
As for the 80s, those were my glory days! What about Duran Duran, Cory Hart, Michael Jackson and Richard Marx? Or rolling your jeans and crazy big hair! My sisters and I would break dance in our driveway, we thought we were so cool. Legwarmers. too.
Ah, good times….

Thanks for the wonderful stroll down memory lane. For me, the 80’s came back big time last spring when New Kids On the Block announced their reunion tour.
Other than that… does anyone recall Max Headroom? The pepsi spokesman?

Thanks for the award!
The only thing I can think of that hasn’t already been mentioned are Vans.
Oh, and the toys — Smurfs, Care Bears, Rainbow Brite. I’m actually about a year too old for My Little Pony but that would qualify too.
Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters!

Hey Eve – Love your blog. Here via ICLW
Everyone had so many great ones but there’s one I haven’t seen yet.
Okay, one word… UNITS. Tell me you know what I’m talking about! I totally rocked my UNITS. For those of you who don’t know what they were… Individually sold pieces of clothing that were mostly solid colors, very modular, one size fits all knit clothing. The idea was that you could mix and match your UNITS and use the pieces in a bunch of different ways. A boatneck long sleeve top with extra fabric at the bottom could be bunched up with a belt (of course their belts are better described as a tube of fabric) or you could wear it long and cinch it at the waist for a dress. Or the belt could double as a slutty skirt… The retail stores in the mall were kinda weird. All white, very small and the whole store was just drawers top to bottom.
Okay, if anybody else remembers this… you are totally awesome. If you don’t than, uh, your just a wannabe now.

I nominated you on my blog for the award too. I think your blog brings IF tribulations to a different level. Even some of my fertile friends are enjoying your take on things. Thank you so much for your dedication to this blog! It really gets me through the day sometimes.

The 80’s… oh god side ponytails, I have this awesome picture of me as a kid in a rah-rah skirt, lace finger gloves, coloured tights and legwarmers (seriously) with a ponytail out to the side that’s got about a yard of ribbon wrapped around it so it sticks up high and far from my head and pulled so tight it looks like it hurts with a few crimped slices through it. Whenever I see it, I’m kinda thankful that I was under 10 for the whole of the 80’s
I did the award thingy, thanks so much for the nomination!! http://exploringchaos.com/?p=112

Thank you for the award. I will do my part, I promise. I’m just behind. As for the 80s, I mostly remember carefully rolling up my pants and having scrunchy socks – I’d wear two or three pairs layered so you could see them in all their scrunchy glory. Also New Kids on the Block.
Liv, I totally remember UNITS and so wanted some. My mom made me some, but it wasn’t the same as actually buying them. The UNITS stores rocked!
